According to research published in the journal ′Epidemiology,′ the chances of miscarriages are higher in the summer than in any other season.

The researchers investigated the effect of different seasons on the risk of miscarriage. It was observed that women in North America who were pregnant had a 44% higher risk of an early miscarriage (within eight weeks of pregnancy) during the summer, especially in late August compared to earlier February. When compared to late February, the chance of miscarriage during any week of pregnancy was 31% higher in late August. Geographically, the findings indicated that this loss was more likely to occur in late August and early September in pregnant women living in the South and Midwest, where summers are the hottest. The risk of miscarriage was highest in the summer, especially the likelihood of an "early" miscarriage before eight weeks of gestation.

The researchers closely monitored 6,104 females who became pregnant within a year after enrolling. They collected data on all types of pregnancy losses, the date of the loss, and the gestational weeks at the time of the loss. These results help to understand the pattern of miscarriage during seasonal changes.

The experts concluded that heat is linked to an increased chance of stillbirth, low birth weight, and other pregnancy complications like preterm delivery. The possible effects of severe heat and other hot-weather environmental or lifestyle exposures on unexpected pregnancy loss, however, require further study. (Hindustan Times, Jul 03, 2022)
